What’s Your Reason For Blogging? No, Your Real Reason.

whats-your-reason-for-blogging-no-your-real-reason

It’s funny to think that blogging is supposed to be something that’s used as a release, a place that you can go to get your thoughts out without having to deal with consequences; yet given how much the internet has evolved and how much things have changed, a lot of people have started to believe that’s hardly the case. Take for instance my good friend, Whitters who seems to have lost her mojo for blogging. Part of it I think falls a lot on people’s perception that a good blog is a blog that attracts visitors, has at least 2 or 3 comments on every blog entry, and is a name that’s been heard before. Truth of the matter is, for me, that’s not the definition of a good blog. The definition of a good blog is a blog that incites passion and connection. One that allows the writer to directly connect with her or his readers by the words that are written and the feelings they evoke. More often then not I end up leaving a blog because it’s become too commercial so to speak and the writer has gotten lost in what they feel they’re supposed to be.

I don’t have a large following and I will admit that at one point that bothered me, but now I realize that my blog isn’t here to entertain the masses; it’s meant for me, no one else. And while I enjoy feedback and comments or discussion amongst the few who read my blog, I think I would be perfectly content to continue writing even if I didn’t have that incentive. This is my home, a place where I go when it’s too much to speak and written word is my only means of releasing what I’m incapable of saying outloud. It’s my place of self reflection, discovery, and inspiration. I will look back on my entries a year from now and realize how much I’ve grown, how much I’ve changed and draw from that knowledge to continue with my life in a means that will benefit me best– I think a lot of people forget that and that’s why a lot of people in the blogging environment get lost or disinterested.

What I ask for the few of you who read this is to step back and evaluate the real reason you have a blog and why you blog. What motivates you to sit down, login to WordPress (or whichever platform you use) and start writing? Is it because you have a large reader base who will grow disappointed if you don’t blog? Is it because you need an escape, a place to call your own? What has blogging done to benefit you as a person? How has it changed your life or has it even changed your life? When you’re able to sit down and answer these questions honestly and without rationality; then perhaps you can discover the true reason you write, and determine if it is because it’s self satisfying or if it’s because it’s completely superficial. Personally, if I had to choose– I’d hope that my true reasons weren’t for the superficial, but for the real connections that so few make in the online environment because I know, even if I have never met you or may never meet you, I can only hope that you’re touched or at the very least inspired by that which I give so freely: my heart.

This is exactly the question I’ve been asking myself for the longest time: why do I blog? Or rather, why I used to blog. this was a really eye-opening post, as well as thoight provoking. Thanks!

“but now I realize that my blog isn’t here to entertain the masses” – and this is what I try to get people to realize. Unless you set out with a base of fans/followers and a mission to entertain them, enlighten them, etc. you are going to be struggling to not only find something to write about but you will get overwhelmed and disappointed by the hunt for followers and advertisements for your blog.

People get frustrated because they feel like they have to write for an audience. Not so! A personal blog is just that: personal. Share whatever the hell you feel like. But people get lost along the way because their idea of a “good blog” tends to be one with a lot of followers and a specific subject.

Really, unless someone is getting paid to do it… just do it for the fun of it.

For me it’s changed a lot – I blogged because I wanted to get my feelings out and let off some steam, then I started to enjoy the comments and blog FOR the readers, and now I’m back to blogging for myself. It excites me to think I’ll be able to look back in a year and see what I was up to. I hate blogs being too commercial with adverts cluttering the page, and sponsored posts every other day – I just don’t see the point of it to be honest which is why I’ll never do it.

I think a lot of people do get lost… I know I did at one point. I kept thinking “Oh no, I’ve got to apologise for not blogging again!” but more recently I’ve just been treating my blog like what it is – a personal diary of sorts, which just happens to be in the public domain. People can comment or they can not comment – it doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

It’s always so much nicer to read a blog which you know is just a stream of words from the writer’s mind, rather than something which has been constructed or thought out in such a way as to gain more readers/attention etc.

I blog for so many reasons. I love to write. I love to tell the story about my life and get out all my thoughts. The main part that I love about it, though, is being a part of a community. I’ve made so many awesome friends in the blogging community and I think that allowing them into my life has been a big part of why I love blogging. Seeing what they think about what I have to say and also seeing what I have in common with people and relating to them in so many ways has helped me through different phases in my life and I’ll always want to blog for that reason alone, if for nothing else.

I blog mainly for myself. I don’t have much for “content’ and my blog may not be interesting to some people. But to me it makes all the difference in the world when I am having a bad day and either have no one to talk to or don’t feel like sharing with my friends and family (though most of them know my website by now anyways). I find when I go to someones website they can have all the content in the world and honestly if their blog doesn’t catch my eye or something doesn’t jump out at me in what they are writing on their first page I generally don’t stay. For me blogging is my way of getting my frustrations out. Or sharing my triumphs. I guess I look for that in other peoples blogs too.

I get deterred from blogging because no one reads it, and I’ll admit that I need to stop doing this. I need to realize that it’s much more like a diary than a place where I want a large following.

I personally used to base the value of a blog upon the number of comments until I realized some of the best blogs are the ones with not a lot of comments but a steady number of readers. I love blogs that make me think and honestly have me captivated by the way they describe their life.

I blog because I need an outlet. Life is tricky and sometimes it can really help just to unleash your words out into cyberspace because maybe there is someone out there that can relate and maybe there isn’t but the unleashing of emotions is what makes me feel better. I do not have a large reader base and honestly could care less.

I do enjoy reading your blog because I feel like when I read I am reading your honest thoughts and opinions, not just something that will gain more readers. I thoroughly admire that about a blogger.
